What about Apples?

appleBrought to you by the 5-a-Day For Better Health TRUST

Apples are one of the most loved and versatile fruits in the world. They are classified as a pome - a fruit that has many tiny seeds within a core at the centre. Today, the science of apple growing is known as pomology.
The health benefits of apples have been recorded since medieval times, which gave rise to the modern day variation of the old English saying "An apple a day keeps the doctor away." In Greek and Roman mythology, apples are symbols of love and beauty. An ancient Greek who wanted to propose to a woman would only have to toss her an apple. If she caught it, he knew she had accepted his offer.

  1. Apples are delicious, an easy to carry snack, low in kilojoules, and a natural mouth freshener.
  2. It is a good idea to eat apples with the skin on as most of the nutrients and fibre is found in and directly under the skin.
  3. There are currently thousands of varieties of apples grown across the world – each with its own taste and colouring.
  4. Apples provide vitamins, minerals and most importantly are an excellent source of both soluble and insoluble fibre. Insoluble fibre adds bulk to the digestive tract and helps to maintain a healthy and regular digestive system.  Soluble fibre can help to lower cholesterol, delay digestion and slow absorption of glucose into bloodstream.
  5. Did you know that a 200 ml serving of Appletiser, Grapetiser or Peartiser constitutes one of your 5 daily vegetable and fruit servings? (At least 3 servings of the 5 daily servings of vegetables and fruit must be fresh or frozen)

There are currently thousands of varieties of apples grown across the world – each with its own unique taste and colouring. Different varieties of apples are available at different times of the year (see the chart below), but considering all varieties, apples are available all year round.
